Dressing for the Corner Office

The corporate uniform is no longer a single look. As Nigerian businesses modernise and global influence reshapes office culture, the rules have loosened — but loosened is not the same as abandoned. Knowing how to read a room and dress one notch above it remains one of the most underrated professional skills.

Authority Without Severity

Black and charcoal suits signal seriousness, but they can also read as cold. A deep cobalt or a rich navy projects the same authority with a measure of personality — particularly powerful for client-facing roles where you want to be both trusted and remembered. Pair it with a crisp white shirt and let the cloth do the talking.

The Power of the Blazer

Not every day demands a full suit. A well-cut blazer over tailored trousers — sometimes called the broken suit — is the workhorse of modern corporate dressing. A textured houndstooth or check blazer brings warmth and approachability to meetings where a full suit might feel like armour.

Dress for the conversation you intend to lead, not merely the one on the calendar.

Fit Over Everything

An off-the-rack suit that fits perfectly will always outperform an expensive one that does not. The most common corporate mistakes are sleeves that swallow the wrist and trousers that puddle at the ankle. A skilled tailor and a modest alteration budget will do more for your professional image than any logo.

Shoes Make the Statement

In the boardroom, eyes drift downward more than you would expect. A polished double monk or oxford in black leather completes the picture and signals attention to detail. Keep them immaculate; scuffed shoes undo an otherwise flawless ensemble in a single glance.
